2013 retrospective

2013, what a year! Kim Jong Un did in his uncle, and then (reports say) his uncle’s entire family. Miley made twerking cool again (it’s not just for drunks at weddings anymore). Pope Francis took over after Benedict handed in his walking papers. Assad became the queen of denial, and Edward Snowden (if that IS his real name) decided the jig was up, and pulled back the curtain. There’s a new prince–George, I wonder if he’ll get a chance to check out his namesake town in BC (bring an umbrella, wot). The biggest hit of 2013 (Justin Bieber is really jealous) was Rob Ford. you just can’t unhear the things he said.

the dance of death

I remember in art college–seeing woodcuts by Hans Holbein, the younger. They had a great graphic style to them and were all so well composed. Fittingly for halloween, Atlas Obscura has put together a bunch of images from his book “the dance of death”.

calgary floods

This past week our city had the worst floods since 1915. Canmore got hit worse than Calgary. Thanks Steve for the link to the June 1915 Herald.

art gone bad

In the wake of the controversy over the killing of a chicken at the Alberta College of Art + Design this past semester, I think this article about scandalous or art in poor taste is appropriate. It’s always great to see art shock people and make them think of issues other than superficialities.
