This is the logo I designed for a hockey team. Sure you never heard of them. It was for my son’s hockey team, so I was free to do whatever I wished. We made decals for their helmets and the kids were ecstatic. Ten minutes on the ice and the referees stopped the game because the stickers made the helmets not meet the code for a regulation helmet. All the kids had to remove the four inch stickers before the game could proceed. They ended up winning the game. In fact they won the division that season. They were a great team, I think having a logo helped them have a stronger sense of team, but that’s probably the designer in me.

yee-haw
Two weeks from now, the entire city (well a lot of it) goes western. It’s always kind of unnerving to see those folks that jump into it with both cowboy boots. Perfectly normal people that likely come from good homes will stand in line for fifteen minutes to have a plate of pancakes and syrup cooked out of the back of a chuckwagon by a person dressed like somebody fresh off the set of Bonanza. The Calgary Stampede is what a lot of folks think it is that makes this city unique. Some just hate the old-fashioned cowboy persona and would love to see the city shed this and become more metropolitan.

this too shall pass
We’re getting a lot of noise from the government about how the economy is just doing great, but I see a lot of people getting laid off across the country. Are we just being hyped or are the people getting laid off going to other places. Are they re-inventing themselves?

makes me all giddy
Yeah, this month this company turns 23 years old. I’m amazed by how much work we’ve done in the past 23 years. Hundreds of publications, logos, and exhibits. Thousands of Illustrations, and my fingers aren’t even tired. I love this business, but, hey, I’ve been designing and Illustrating ever since I won the contest to design the school newspaper masthead when I was in grade two (I beat out some tough competition—a lot of grade-sixers gave me the evil eye for weeks).

Elvis lives!
Teresa Johnston at Redpoint Media was the Art Dirctor for this fun piece I did for one of the publications she works on. How often do you get to draw Elvis and an old Cadillac? Not enough for sure.

poking fun
Sure, you think I’m poking fun at Stephen Harper. But I’m really thinking about Shepard Fairey. He has become the poster boy for appropriation and copyright infringement issues. Was it OK for him to use the work of another person to make his work? He quotes the Marilyn Monroe poster by Andy Warhol in his defence. Good arguments on both sides.
